Statement from Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen

Statement from Councilmember Allen on U.S. District Court of Appeals denying En banc hearing on concealed carry “good reason” requirement

Following the U.S. Court of Appeals - District of Columbia Circuit’s denial of an En banc hearing to appeal the 2-1 ruling against DC’s “good reason” requirement when applying for a concealed carry permit, DC Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6), chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, issued the following statement:

“I’m very disappointed. Our concealed carry law carefully balanced our unique public safety needs while upholding constitutional rights. Our city will be less safe with more guns on the streets and it will make the job of our metropolitan police officers all the more difficult. I believe the Attorney General presented strong arguments that deserved a full review. However, my resolve to keep our city safe is not lessened. In the coming days, we will consider our options in consultation with the Attorney General and the Mayor and determine how to best proceed.”
