WASHINGTON, DC – Councilmember Charles Allen, in his role as Chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, will lead a public hearing on the Fair Elections Act of 2017, a bill which would create a public financing option for candidates running for District of Columbia Mayor, Attorney General, Councilmember, or a seat on the State Board of Education.

Neighborhood Update

June is flying by. It's already time for summer vacations, Fourth of July celebrations, and pool and camp season! I'm looking forward to a vacation with my family later this summer, as well as the upcoming annual recess break for the Council that will let me get out into Ward 6 even more for a few weeks. Be sure to save Monday, July 24 through Saturday, July 30 for Ward 6 Week! We're lining up a bunch of fun events throughout Ward 6 to celebrate summer and explore our community. More info coming on this soon -- but just know, I am really excited about the plans we're finalizing.

We are nearly through the FY18 Budget process and I wanted to provide an overview of some of the projects funded by the Council in Ward 6. But first, I want to begin by thanking so many residents for their input into the process. From our Budget Town Hall in April through the final vote, I am grateful to have heard from so many residents.  I wrote about a lot of these projects in the June issue of Hill Rag as well.

Councilmember Allen Proud of Budget for Public Safety, Major Focus on Ward 6 Schools

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the DC Council held its first vote on the FY2018 budget, moving forward with a budget that included several of Councilmember Allen’s top priorities. This included an increase in the per-pupil funding formula to three percent, significant investments in affordable housing, public safety, aging-in-place programs and fully funding the launch of Paid Family Leave.

PRESS RELEASE: Major Renovation of Eastern Market Metro Park To Be Funded in DC's 2018 Budget

WASHINGTON, DC – Eastern Market Metro Park is set to receive $4.5 million in funding to begin the planning, design, and implementation of a complete renovation of the two block space surrounding the Eastern Market Metro Station.

“Right now, the Eastern Market Metro Park is a place people walk through – but I want it to be a place that people walk to. We can build a greener, safer park that brings together our community and transforms this important public space.  There are already a lot of great ideas about what this park can look like. This funding ensures we can take the crucial next steps to start implementing them,” said Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen.

Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety Approves Its FY2018 Budget

NEAR Act Funded, Significant Investments for First Responders, and New Program To Provide Housing Attorneys for Low-Income Residents

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety approved its recommendations for the budgets of agencies and legislation under its purview.

“This budget balances two goals of the Committee – to be a nationwide leader in our approach to public safety by implementing community-based best practices and creating just outcomes for all; and ensuring our streets are safe, and our police, fire and EMS have the tools and support they need. I am proud of the work of the Committee and grateful to my colleagues on for their support,” said Councilmember Charles Allen, Committee Chair.

DC Council Passes Law Permanently Setting DC Primary Election Date on Third Tuesday in June

WASHINGTON, DC – Today the DC Council passed Councilmember Charles Allen’s Primary Date Alteration Amendment Act of 2017, which moves the date of all future DC primary elections to the third Tuesday in June, starting next year on June 19, 2018. As is common with legislation needing to take effect quickly, the bill was passed with identical emergency legislation, effectively moving the date immediately.
